Strains and effects of marijuana vary depending on the type of marijuana. There are two basic types of Marijuana plants, Cannabis Sativa and Cannabis Indica.
Sativa Strains and Effects
The Sativa variety is usually taller, has thinner leaves and is usually found naturally in hotter, lower elevation climates around the equator. The Sativa plant takes longer to flower, or produce what has been known as “buds”, which are more commonly called “flowers” in today’s legal markets. Sativa’s strains and effects usually induce cerebal effects like “uplifting”, “energetic”, or “creative”.
Indica Strains and Effects
Indica plants are usually shorter with thicker stems and broad, dark green leaves. They also have shorter flowering cycles, and grow well in colder climates with shorter growing seasons. Indica strains and effects include descriptions like “relaxed”, “lethargic”, “sleepy”, and “stoned”. Users remember the saying that INDica puts you “IN DA COUCH” because of it’s relaxing effect. The main chemical in marijuana, delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, is the chemical mostly responsible for the psychoactive effects of marijuana. There is also the effect of the other compounds in Marijuana, most notably CBD or Cannabidiol. CBD’s mostly are know for their relaxing effects, and also in controlling certain types of seizures in mammals.

Other Compounds in Different Strains
There are other compounds such as Terpines, with compounds like Myrcene, Pinene, Linalool, Limonene, Humuline, Beta Caryophyllene, and Terpineol. Some of these Terpine compounds have anti-inflammatory properties. It is estimated that there are over 1000 different varieties of Marijuana, with many more varieties being grown and cross bred constantly. Cannabis is a complex plant with over 500 chemical compounds, and over 60 of them are cannabinoid (CBD) compounds, some of them with opposing or compounding effects with each other. The effects for these compounds together are known as the “entourage effect”. The various strains of Sativa’s and Indica’s have different quantities of these compounds. There are also what is known as Hybrids, which are cross breeds of both Sativa and Indica. These hybrids have different effects based on the ratios of the various compounds in each strain.
Some of the more common strains of Marijuana used for pain are called Blue Dream, AC/DC, Harlequin, Charlotte’s Web, The Gift, Remedy, Haleighs Hope, and Nordle. The quantity of THC is usually low and quantity of CBD in these strains is higher, so the result is pain relief without getting too “high”. Charlotte’s Web has received a lot of press because of it’s ability to suppress certain seizures in children. There are many strains available with different properties and results.
