Colitis, IBS, Chron’s Disease

Medical Marijuana, or Cannabis, has been found to treat Colitis, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), and Chron’s Disease. There are other compounds in Marijauna or Cannabis such as Beta-caryophyllene, which has been show that taken orally reduces the effects of Colitis (1). CBD or Cannabidiol alone was found to be not as effective as CBD with THC (2). More research investigating the many compounds of cannabis could reveal that certain combinations of these compounds would greatly increase the efficacy of using marijuana for treatment of afflictions that are affected by the Endocannabinoid system in the human body. Some CB2 receptors acted as an antagonist and increased inflammation. Further studies to determine optimal dosage and compounds are in order. CBD has also been found to act as a protective agent against acquiring Colitis where mice were given dinitrobenzene sulphonic acid to induce the colitis (3). Since the marijuana compounds have been proven to reduce pain and inflammation, it could be good alternative treatment for those patients who are susceptible to the side effects using regular prescription drugs.
